Citizenship is a modern social-political institution that defines the interplay between the individual, state, and society. This course will explore citizenship's various definitions and boundaries as a developing political and legal concept and a lived experience. Beyond the classic approaches to understanding citizenship: liberal, republican, and communitarian, we will explore alternative perspectives such as a feminist lens of citizenship, urban citizenship and the idea of the right to the city, and postnational, global, or regional citizenship. By looking at various global cases, the course will attempt to answer the following questions: How can we define a citizen? By which criteria can we determine citizenship (birth location, biology, marriage, territory, or petition)? Is it a right, status, privilege, or identity? Does it entail any responsibilities, privileges, or both? What does it mean to live without citizenship? Besides sociology, readings will be drawn from various disciplines and theoretical and empirical scholarship, such as political theory, gender studies, history, migration studies, law and legal studies, ethnic and racial studies (and more), to explore contemporary debates and struggles regarding the contentious nature of citizenship.
