Marx and Marxism
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Sociology
CRN: 15941
Credits: 4
The course will read and discuss writings of Marx from 1843 to 1875. We will also consider some selected writings of Engels, Lenin and Lukacs. Our aim is to treat Marx as a philosopher, social theorist, historian and political economist, depending on the nature of the text discussed. Each week, students will have to report on a text of their choice. Depending on the number of students in the class each student will present one, two or three texts. These reports will be integrated into a longer final paper presentation. For the papers, secondary literature will also be useful to consider, along with influences on Marx such as Hegel, Adam Smith, and David Ricardo. Another option will be comparison of Marx to authors such as Tocqueville, and Max Weber.
