After a brief introduction to the history of propaganda research, this class will focus on contemporary manifestations of misinformation and disinformation. From dictators weaponizing state-controlled media to the rampant spread of conspiracy theories on social media, we will cover a wide array of contemporary propaganda based on brand new research. We will also consider how to avoid oversimplifying complex events and discuss remedies that could limit the threat propaganda poses to democracy.
