Learn to use the city’s galleries and museums as your classroom. Each week, students are assigned to visit a different exhibition in the city. Seminar discussions the following class contextualize that experience, with a slide presentation and a providing of art historical and current cultural insights. We view a broad mix of shows, with an emphasis on today’s vanguard contemporary art as well as on the modern art of the 20th Century. Students visit New York’s leading museums as well as commercial gallery districts in West Chelsea, The Lower East Side and Uptown. The seminar session broadens understanding of your experiences, along with a series of writing exercises and a final critical review paper. Curatorial practice and the professional methods of today’s contemporary galleries are emphasized as well.
