Schools of Public Engagement: Media
CRN: 15441

You’ve made a film, now what? The goal of this weekend short course is to introduce students to the ever-changing landscape of independent film distribution and exhibition. Students will learn how to navigate the world of film festivals and the business of distribution, from theatrical to digital/VOD, broadcast and educational. Most filmmakers hope to premiere their films at Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, yet many regional festivals get overlooked as viable alternatives. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of how to intelligently take command of this essential component of the life of their films. Topics will include film festival best practices, short film success stories, and how to build a team of collaborators. Students will devise distribution and marketing strategies specifically tailored to their films. The instructor, a seasoned film programmer and distributor, will guide them through this significant, yet often neglected process. Grades will consist of a final marketing distribution presentation and active participation in class discussion.
