This five-week Saturday course introduces students to the fundamentals of sound production, location sound recording, sound design and concepts in post -production audio. In this course students will learn the scientific basis of hearing, acoustics, sound production, and audio recording, as well as getting trained for basic proficiency in the operation of location sound technology: mixers, microphones, booms, and recording devices, including the audio sections of digital camcorders and cameras. Students will also train to listen and distinguish acoustic conditions, develop their ability to distinguish acceptable sound recordings and how to approach film shoots to achieve the best possible audio result by being introduced to professional on-set procedures for both dramatic and documentary audio recording situations. Participants will also demonstrate such practices in classroom projects as well as an introduction to the theory and aesthetics of sound design and learn the basic concepts of sound editing and post-production re-recording. Assignments will include one paper, and one sound design project to be fulfilled outside of class and several in-class audio projects to complete. These projects will involve both field recording and some sound editing.
