The Films of The Coen Brothers This five-week course explores the work of the Coen Brothers, as part of this semester's auteur series studying the films of popular contemporary filmmakers. We will explore the Coen Brothers' canon in this course through multiple academic disciplines, such as Gender Studies, American Studies, History, Film Studies, Film Theory, Formalist Film Theory, and Cultural Studies. Students will discuss and deconstruct narrative elements and the social context of these films, while paying particular attention to filmic elements such as mise en scene, cinematography, editing and sound design. The following five films from the Coen Brothers' canon will be discussed in the course: "Raising Arizona," "Barton Fink," "Fargo," "The Big Lebowski," and "A Serious Man".
