This course introduces contemporary Chinese cinema through the vantage points and representations of the art, cultural, literary, visual, and historical. By studying the award winning and socio-politically polemic Chinese films produced for both Chinese and global audience in the past century, the course examines the questions of modernity and socialism in the context of aesthetics, ethics, morality, social justice, and resistance. Students will develop literary, analytical, and critical thinking skills and exposed to dynamic approaches to understanding the rapidly changing Chinese society. (Course is taught in English)
