Multi Genre (NonMFA)
Schools of Public Engagement: Creative Writing
CRN: 16888
Credits: 3
This writing workshop — the first of its kind at the New School - is intended for graduate students across the University, irrespective of their school, program, department, and discipline: CoPA, NSSR, or Parsons. Our aim is to create through class discussion of manuscripts, outside reading, and individual conferences the circumstances that might allow you to create your strongest writing to date. This new course assumes that many of us work in multiple genres, or work across genres, and assumes that even if we work primarily in a single genre, our writing might deepen and grow from exposure to other genres, and might benefit from critiques by writers from those other genres and backgrounds. Students will submit work on pre-set occasions, and this work might take the form of discrete individual pieces or comprise excerpts from a single long continuous project. Our writing might engage research and archives, or involve visual and performance elements, whether formally “creative” or formally “critical.” This workshop welcomes and encourages all forms of writing, however fictive, non-fictive, lyrical, scholarly, experimental, or beyond categorization
