Prose Workshop: Fiction/NonFiction
New School for Social Research: Creative Writing
CRN: 17964
Credits: 4
Workshop Description: In this advanced fiction and non-fiction workshop, we will study the aspects of craft across both genres—from plot and pacing, to timeline and structure, to point of view and point of telling—as we concurrently workshop weekly submissions, and investigate the nature of identity in literature. Who gets to write what? How can we write “the other” when our own experiences are limited to one? Who is your audience, and who do you (either necessarily or unconsciously) alienate with your work? How does the publishing industry help or hinder that process? Connecting the internal mechanics of literature to its external life in the world, we will sharpen and refine your work, bringing out what is essential. You don't need to be able to write equally well across genres to be in this class, but curiosity and openness to both is a must.
