Credits: 4

Across all genres of art and epistemologies is the presence of poetics, which is defined as the study of poetry and its techniques. But in a world where poetry can be found in anything, we are encouraged to see a world in which poetry can be found in everything. In this seminar structured course, we will study poetry as a way of looking at other art forms. From other genres of literature, like fiction and memoir, to the visual arts, including film and sculpture, we will use poetics as a framework to help us better understand the works we encounter and their metaphorical potential. We will also use the NYC landscape as a medium to help us understand its poetic architecture by visiting parts of the city that tell unique stories. This class aims to personalize the poetic, and to give every student the opportunity to find poetry in the literature and media they study.
