In this seminar, we’ll consider works that transcend genre. In what ways can fiction incorporate and interact with non-fiction, how can a story be like an essay, an essay be like a story or a poem? What strategies do hybrid works employ? In what ways are various genres in conversation with each other? And how can you use these strategies in your own creative work? Books we’ll read include Alphabetical Diaries by Sheila Heti, Michael Ondaatje’s The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, Chris Krause’s I Love Dick, Constance Debre’s Love Me Tender, Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, Maus, Jonah Mixton-Webster’s Stereo (Type), Claudia Rankin’s Citizen, Sophie Calle’s
