Writing the Short Form: Micro Memoir, Personal Essay, Op-Ed, Humor, & Satire
Schools of Public Engagement: Creative Writing
CRN: 17154
Credits: 3
Brevity is the core of all writing. Brevity is also the name of a literary website where essays are 750 words or less. By mastering the shortform, you will be able to write at any length—with enhanced skills in eliminating wordiness and focusing sharply on one theme. In this creative writing workshop, we will follow philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s adage: “It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.” We focus on micro essays: 100 words (“Tiny Love Stories”), shortform personal essays (500-750 words), Op-Eds and Opinion pieces (600-750 words), punchy humor and satire (New Yorker Daily Shouts, McSweeney’s, et al). Writers will read, analyze, and explore in each of these genres, and then choose to craft any or all of these forms throughout the semester. We share our work in supportive critiques and discuss publishing opportunities. Writers learn the value of writing discipline, revision, inspirational prompts, and where to find ideas.Course Description Coming Soon!
