Pitch Perfect: Developing, Writing & Pitching Multiplatform Non-fiction The key to being a successful freelance writer is knowing the art of the pitch. The world’s most fabulous story idea is nothing without a carefully crafted, targeted sales pitch to the right publication and editor. This class aims to have each student pitch and place stories before the semester ends. Knowing how, where, and when to pitch a story is critical to freelance success. Today, the ever-changing media landscape has opened up new opportunities for writers to sell their stories. This class will focus on finding and developing the kinds of stories editors want. We’ll explore writing a pitch email and targeting the right outlets to improve success. We’ll cover what editors want, what they don’t want and what separates the good pitches from the bad. We’ll also look at developing and writing non-fiction that sells, delivering stories on deadlines, and what happens after an editor says yes. Assignments include writing stories and accompanying pitches, which will be workshopped in class. Guest visits are expected.
