Writing the Photobook
Spring 2025
Taught By: Robert Dunn
Section: A

CRN: 2792

Credits: 3

In the last decade the world of photobooks—books comprised of a series of photos, analogous to a short story collection, a chapbook of poems—has bloomed. When you get a photo just right, magic comes: from light, color, composition, all the ways that photos can reveal hidden truths. Then what? Just as you can write a novel, you can “write” a photobook, putting strong images in the most telling order, then laying them out to artful effect. This course helps students understand photobooks, and go on to shape and refine their own. Which photos? Each student’s choice. How should the photos be taken? Through your iPhone, your Leica, your funky Holga throwaway ... any way you wish. Class time will be divided between studying the history of the serious photobook and making our own books. Written requirements: An ongoing prospectus on your book, refined as your work changes, plus an essay on a classic photobook of your choice. General requirements: Passion, curiosity, and enough photos (and more) to make the best possible photobook.
