New York City has a long tradition of artistic exchange and collaboration between writers and painters and of exchange between writing and the visual arts. This course extends that collaboration, encouraging student writers to respond to visual artworks in a spirit of experimentation. The class splits its time between The New School classroom, where we share our writing, and some of the city’s preeminent art museums. We will spend time exploring the collections and current exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and, time permitting, other, less well-known institutions and galleries. Writing genres we will explore include poetry, flash fiction, “ekphrastic” prose and poetry, and hybrid forms. A final portfolio, containing each student's original work written during the course, will be due on the last day of class.
