Design Strategy Capstone Studio
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 14560
Credits: 3
In the Design Strategy Capstone Studio, the second half of the second-year MS-SDM capstone experience, students develop a strategic plan for bringing a concept to implementation. Working in teams on ideas developed in the preceding Design Research Capstone Studio, students leverage complementary backgrounds, skills, and networks to advance their projects. Course activities include outreach to external partners, experts, groups, potential investors, and other stakeholders, developing networks of trust and links to potential future partners and employers. This studio course has a modular structure, incorporating concept testing, landscape analysis, function tree and roadmap development, and launch and scale-up modeling phases. Students pursue experimental approaches to prototyping and iterative testing where appropriate. The creation of a development matrix helps student teams define how far the ambitions, values and purpose revealed in their Design Research Capstone Studio outcomes can be satisfied through their subsequent development work, and enables them to design tools for the ongoing qualitative assessment of their work in progress. The final deliverable for the course is a comprehensive presentation of a strategic plan, demonstrating the students’ mastery of the development tools introduced in the course – tools that can be applied to other projects in the future.
