Parsons School of Design: Sch. Art and Dsgn Hist and Th
CRN: 18270
Credits: 3
Building on the 20th-Century Latin American Design course, Focus Latin America is a graduate seminar series that explores the history of design and material culture in a specific Latin American country or region. This series examines the socio-political, economic, and cultural forces shaping visual and material expression while also considering transnational artistic production, influence, and exchange. The inaugural seminar, Focus Latin America: México, investigates how Mexican creators have engaged with identity, modernism, Indigenous and popular arts, and intersectional design in the 20th century. Topics include print culture, fashion and cinema, product design, borderland culture, and design education. Students will expand their research through a Global South lens, engaging with the rich theoretical frameworks of Mexican and Latin American art and design. The final project for the class will consist of a curatorial project building on class exercises, where students integrate historical and theoretical frameworks with object-centered inquiry.
