This course explores the intersections between design and material culture production and queer and non-normative identities. Focusing on 20th and 21st-century production, we examine how queer expression and politics have influenced and been influenced by visual and material culture. Framed within significant feminist, queer, and decolonial theoretical approaches, we dissect hidden and overt meanings found in queer design, art, architecture, craft, and everyday objects, unraveling narratives often marginalized by mainstream historical discourse. As a result, this course will help refine the way you consider the intersection of materiality and identity formation.
