This design studio invites students to create work grounded in the stories, memories, and experiences that shape who they are. Instead of treating "culture" as something abstract or external, this course positions each student's lived experience—family histories, community ties, migration paths, inherited traditions, objects of meaning, and everyday environments—as a design resource.Through research, discussion, hands-on making, material exploration, and optional AI-assisted visualization, students will investigate how memory and meaning can be translated into spatial and material form. Studio prompts guide students to identify a story or issue emerging from a community they belong to—whether cultural, familial, diasporic, LGBTQIA+, regional, disabled, linguistic, spiritual, or otherwise—and develop a design proposal that responds to that context. While this is not a required community-partnership course, students will be encouraged—and supported—to connect their work to real communities whenever possible. One model students may explore is the Rosebud Field Work with the Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud, where design, storytelling, and making were used to support youth-led initiatives grounded in Lakota community values. Projects like this offer a framework for ethical engagement and demonstrate how personal narrative, cultural knowledge, and design can meaningfully intersect. Students whose work aligns with ongoing Parsons partnerships—such as Rosebud, Beyond Threads, or other faculty-led initiatives—may choose to connect their final projects to those efforts. This course will provide guidance on what ethical, respectful engagement looks like and how designers can collaborate rather than impose.
