Students in this course will learn the principles of designing and constructing lighting fixtures. Through a combination of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, and studio work, students will learn about lighting technology, materials, shapes, colors, and textures. They will focus on creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional luminaire while considering the illuminated and non-illuminated appearance of the object and its relationship to the environment and occupants. Students will use off-the-shelf technology to construct their fixtures and will be introduced to safety considerations and industry standards. By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge necessary to create their own unique and custom lighting luminaire as a full-scale mockup and will evaluate its efficacy using the Parsons Light + Energy Lab.

Open to students in SCE with others by permission. Pre-requisite(s): PUAD 2030 Materiality and Assembly, PUID 2030 Materiality and Assembly, PUPD 2030 Materials and Manufacturing Process, or PAID 1030 Drawing Interiors 1: 2D.
