This course provides an introduction to designing with non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass, nickel silver and sterling silver. The focus will be both on design (form and function) as well as metal working techniques. Jewelry formats and small hand held objects will be the project formats of this course. A variety of techniques will be presented: sawing, filing, drilling, riveting, cold metal forming, soldering using an acetylene torch, surface texturing, wax working, and metal finishing. Production of lost wax cast elements will be outsourced. Students are required to purchase supplies for this class with the provided resource list and will be responsible for their own outsourcing procedures. Companies to contract with will be listed and students will be taught how to engage with these businesses.

Open to: Bachelors degree in Product Design, Integrated Design or Fashion Design major, juniors and seniors only; others by permission of the Product Design program. Pre-requisite(s): PUPD 2011 Design Studio 2, PUIC 2451 Integrated Design Studio 2 or PUFD 2221 Design Studio 2 .
