Exploring Strategic Design
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 15833
Credits: 3
Strategic design and management - a field agnostic to any one industry - covers territory with a diverse array of job descriptions. Students in this class will explore the landscape of strategic design across corporations (large and small), start-ups, organizations, and non-profits through meetings with practitioners in their offices and in the classroom. Each week, via immersive field trips and engaging guest speakers, students will learn about aspects of strategic design that may inform their career trajectory. Over the course of the semester, students will be assigned readings, podcasts, and videos covering historical and contemporary perspectives and precedents, they will research areas of interest, and meet industry professionals aligned with those interests. Workshops in storytelling will support students with their written and image-driven narrative skills. Based on the editorial abilities they wish to develop: design, writing, audio, or image-making, students will produce articles, interviews, podcasts, photo essays, or videos, which will be collectively published by the class at the end of the semester. This content will be shared across the Strategic Design and Management BBA cohort as a survey of the current state of strategic design.
