Society and our planet are in desperate need of sustainable designers. We cannot afford to continue making more "stuff" and we certainly must break our patterns of living, consuming, and depleting resources at alarmingly accelerated rates. In this studio course, students will work through frameworks that promote slowness – craft-oriented and indigenous-centric – to design for each of the three vertices of sustainability: equity (social and labor), economy (business models), and ecology (natural resources and the environment). During the first part of the semester, students will redesign an existing product, service, or system; and in the second half, create their own project drawing from their own skills and interests. Classes will include workshops to promote a self-reflective practice, and facilitated discussions about a range of readings including from philosophy , productivity, and indigenous studies.
