In this course, students will design an audio tour – a walking podcast that connects to space and place in a radical way. The course will introduce the history of audio storytelling, particularly its contribution to radical forms of documentation and the dissemination of information. The focus of the audio story is on walking through the urban environment, and students can develop their story using an issue they are familiar with, or by using the thematic and spatial prompts introduced in class. Students will acquire concept development and production skills, and will engage with the ethical and alternative nature of podcasting and audio storytelling. The final project will be a 15-minute audio narrative designed to be listened to while walking. Accompanying materials (such as maps and description) will highlight a critical aspect of the space - for example erased or forgotten histories, hidden infrastructures, or traces of resistance. Selections will be featured on WNSR, the New School radio station. Open to: All undergraduate degree students.
