Design Writing: Histories
Spring 2025
Taught By: Jennifer Rittner
Section: X1

CRN: 15802

Credits: 3

The history of design can be best understood when explored through a spectrum of experiences: makers and users, intentions and consequences, experiences and interpretations. In this course, students explore the role design has historically played in supporting, enabling, interrogating or dismantling systems of marginalization, disenfranchisement and dehumanization. Together we will discuss how the writing of design history informs design thinking and making, and attempt to understand how we construct cultural narratives and meaning through history. Students will engage with design-centered essays and objects each week, conduct research around the weekly themes, and write reflections, critiques, essays, articles, satire, infographics or employ any writing style that allows them to best communicate their ideas.
