The colonial project is built on the violent exclusion, genocide, and disenfranchisement of indigenous peoples, and involves the marginalization of ancestral and traditional forms of knowledge. In spite of this, these ways of knowing and forms of wisdom have survived and are integral for social and ecological transformation. In this class, we will discuss the historical, philosophical, and spiritual roots of our current cultural etymologies and ecological crisis as we are all present on this land. Students will be introduced to Indigenous voices on topics including cosmovision, worldviews, and ways of knowing: relations with land, animism, and natural law. By delving deeper into Western worldviews, intellectualism, and modernity as they relate to knowledge, we study perspectives of Indigenous critiques, including calls for decolonizing education, research, land relations, and food systems. We will also explore different ways of relating with one another and the earth by digging deeper into Lakota language and the world it worlds through deep listening and shifting paradigms of knowledge. This class engages art, storytelling, music, design, and experimental research practices as they relate to language and the land, asking challenging questions about how knowledge is transmitted and the futures it shapes. Students will explore and develop work in conversation with these topics in various creative mediums. How do we grapple with transmitted knowledge that cannot be taught but can only be experienced? We will focus on sharing knowledge but also creating embodied experiences through gatherings and ceremonies.
