DS4: Sponsored by Macy's, Co-Designing Accessible Fashion is a special section on disability fashion design for the Spring 2026 semester. DS4 provides students with an opportunity to develop a personal design philosophy. Students will develop a deeper understanding of research methodologies and innovative approaches to materiality. This course helps students increase the depth and breath of their design processes and critical thinking skills. In the fourth course in a four‐course core sequence, students will begin to theorize and contextualize their own work, in readiness for the senior capstone experience/final major project. Design Studio 4 works collaboratively with Specialized Studio 2.

This course immerses students in creating innovative fashion designs that are accessible to a broader audience. Students will take an approach of participatory design with disabled models, collaboratively developing garments, wearables, and accessories that enhance the wearer's experience. Through an understanding of contemporary disability scholarship, critical thinking, research, co-design, and iterative development, students will create work that serves broader populations, including people with disabilities. By integrating accessible design strategies and expanding the meaning of access into their creative process, students will help reduce barriers that make clothing inaccessible and innovate through fashion.
