"This course looks at how cultural publications shape their editorial voices through digital strategy and how their approach to distribution reflects their goals. We’ll study a variety of platforms like Metalabel, which uses token-gated content to create scarcity and community ownership, and Rest of World, where reporting is tailored for both global and local audiences. We’ll also examine Figma Shortcut’s mix of editorial and product education, Are.na’s organic, community-driven content, and Dirt’s internet-first coverage with brand partnerships and membership tiers. The first half of the class focuses on analyzing these approaches, with guest speakers sharing how they align editorial goals with distribution strategies. Students will unpack how decisions like where and how content is shared shape the identity of a publication and its relationship with readers, and develop an understanding of business goals and editorial strategy. In the second half, students will work in teams to prototype digital strategies for a selected publication. Projects will include rethinking how past issues are archived, building a digital voice to complement the print format, and imagining ways to reach a broader audience online. Students will conduct audience interviews, develop data-informed strategies, and create prototypes using tools like Figma. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of how editorial strategy intersects with design and distribution. They’ll also leave with practical experience pitching ideas and creating thoughtful, effective digital solutions for cultural publications." Open to NSSR (CPCJ and Creative Writing); MPS in Communication Design; Journalism + Design (Lang).
