Dream Narratives
Fall 2025
Taught By: Rose Rejouis
Section: AX

CRN: 18123

Credits: 4

In this class we will consider the use of dreams in experimental poetry and literature and their impact on readers. We will explore how multiple storytelling devices in myths, fantastic fiction, magical realism, surrealism, mimic the structure of dreams. We will muse about the figure of the writer as dreamer, when we read Rimbaud, Rilke and Proust. We will pause at the intersection of storytelling and dream analysis to witness the emergence of the concept of the uncanny in both Hoffman’s The Sandman and Freud’s work. Students will be asked to keep a dream journal during the duration of the class and be expected to submit both academic and creative writing.
