Professional Writing Practices
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Literary Studies
CRN: 18206
Credits: 4
Many serious writing students would like to gain more information about literary career options and professionalization across the genres. What practices of research, preparation, and professionalization do we need to develop a sustainable, fulfilling writing practice in the short and long terms? This elective course welcomes a semester-long conversation about the best practices for further study and for preparation for careers in literary and literary-adjacent fields. As the beta model of this course, we require active student interest and participation to crowd-source and investigate multiple career and grad school paths and to create departmental resources that can benefit us all. We will learn from faculty and guest speakers with practical advice on topics that may include: internships, grad schools (including MFA programs), job letters and CVs, jobs in different publishing sectors, how and when to publish our own work across the genres, grants and residencies, and maintaining writing practice. This course is not individual career counseling or a writing workshop (though it will require student writing contributions and models); it is a community effort to familiarize ourselves and others with the resources and knowledge we need to pursue (or create!) our own paths.
