Design Research Capstone Studio
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 16031
Credits: 3
In the Design Research Capstone Studio, the first half of the second-year MS-SDM capstone experience, students explore and apply methods from the evolving field of design research, identifying an area in need of innovation and opportunities for intervention in that area. Working in teams, students explore various research methods including primary and secondary scientific research and methods drawn from the field of participatory design, with a special focus on underserved and underrepresented populations. Students challenge quantitative data with qualitative insights – the core of design thinking – and master the techniques of opportunity mapping. The design research process also requires students to engage independently with a variety of external voices – most importantly the people they are addressing in their research, but also domain experts and other stakeholders with relevant knowledge. Students are expected to approach the course in a collaborative spirit, sharing informed feedback on other students’ projects and welcoming constructive input on their own team’s work in progress. Graded assignments include several documents and short presentations showing in-process work across the term, and a concept pitch together with a process visualization that is the final course deliverable. Successful completion of the Design Research Capstone Studio is a prerequisite for the succeeding Design Strategy Capstone Studio course.
