Designing the Future of Business
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 14883
Credits: 3
The global COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the tattered threads of capitalism, exposing its inability to protect all but the privileged few from disaster. Combined with an increasingly irreparable climate crisis, expanding corporate hegemony, growing political mistrust, and more, it is clear our current neoliberal economic systems are failing. However, from the wreckage has sprouted something beautiful: the collective vision of a world beyond capitalism rooted in justice, mutualism, and care. In conversation with leading scholars, activists, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, and other post-capitalist pioneers, students will explore the role of business in shaping this future. Students will learn to untether themselves from traditional capitalistic business frameworks and instead leverage alternative business models, organizational strategies, and operational practices for change. They will situate their own design practices within emerging post-capitalist movements like the Solidarity Economy, degrowth, open source, and more, and will leave the class confident that a world beyond capitalism is not only possible, it’s here.
